Live Action Films Based on Manga 2014 Edition

2014 is coming to an end so I wanted to highlight just a few manga-based films that were released this year.

Posted on

Rurouni Kenshin by Nobuhiro Watsuki

Directed by Keishi Otomo

Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends ended the Rurouni Kenshin film series on September 2014 and was number one for four weeks in the box office. With the highly successful first Rurouni Kenshin film that was released on August 25, 2012, the two part sequel came out and was released one month between the other. Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno came out on August 1, 2014 and Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends was released on September 13, 2014. The character of Himura Kenshin is played by Takeru Satoh and Kamiya Kaoru is played by Emi Takei. The positive reviews for these films makes me anticipate the blu-ray collection coming out in Japan this month so I can watch them all.

Parasyte Hitoshi Iwaaki

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki

A recent 2014 live action film released was Parasyte, or Kiseiju, that was released on November 29. It is part 1 of a two part film of the popular manga with the anime currently being aired in Japan. The sci-fi manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki was released in 1988 and serialized until 1995. The film debuted as #1 with both negative and positive reviews. The starring roles are Shota Sometani as Shinichi Izumi, Ai Hashimoto as Satomi Murano, and Sadao Abe as Migi. The second film is set to release on April 25, 2015. I am curious to see the first part of Parasyte because the trailers looked amazing.

Ao Haru Ride by Io Sakisaka

Directed by Takahiro Miki

As we are nearing the end of the year, one film coming out on December 13 is Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride) by Io Sakisaka. The manga was released on February 2011 in Shueisha’s Bessatsu Margaret and is currently ongoing in Japan. The anime adaptation of Ao Haru Ride aired this past July. This shoujo manga has gained popularity for its character development as well as plot. The starring roles are Tsubasa Honda as Futaba Yoshioka and Masahiro Higashide as Kou Mabuchi. I want to see how this live action film will perform in the box office.

That wraps up a few of the films I wanted to mention. Let us know if you’ve watched any of these yet and what you think. Do you have any films you’re anticipating in 2015? *coughs* Attack on Titan
